Peter Schloss with Grupa Ee

The Way Out—Visitor and Press Center (2021)
Installation

steirischer herbst traditionally offers a visitor and press center that temporarily occupies a space in town. It gives guests a place to meet and have coffee, but also serves as an artwork in its own right.

This year’s decor was created by Peter Schloss, an artist with a long-standing interest in precise measurement and perceptual illusion, working in collaboration with the collective Grupa Ee. Together they have created a unique allover painting for this year’s Visitor and Press Center, reacting to its venue, a former drugstore. Combining overlays of patterns derived from conventional warning tape and other urban barriers, it yields something akin to the famous Café Wall Illusion first described in 1898, thus offering a small and playful way out in the form of psychedelia for the eyes, no drugs required.

Bio
Peter Schloss (1974) is an artist working in a variety of techniques and materials. A chief concern of his often site-specific practice are aspects of ethics and the theory of knowledge. His work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout Germany and Europe, most recently at the Kunstmuseum Bochum. He lives in Cologne.

Grupa Ee (founded in 2005 in Ljubljana) is an independent design collective run by Mina Fina, Damjan Ilić, and Ivian Kan Mujezinović. Clients in the cultural field include theaters, galleries, museums, and publishers. The collective’s more experimental work hovers on the boundary between design and artistic intervention. Grupa Ee is based in Ljubljana.
